What is a Hosted Desktop?
Hosted Desktops takes the business applications and data that each individual needs
access to from their Microsoft Windows PC or Laptop and puts it ‘on the Cloud’.
Access to these Applications and Data is from a Hosted Desktop (via Remote Desktop
or Citrix Applications) and is available on almost any operating system and device.
So The Cloud in terms of Hosted Desktops gives your users and your business freedom
from device constraints and can make (for example) your Apple iPad your only day
to day business device you need.
Your teams can have secure anywhere access to their business software applications,
data and files and your business can save money by using “ThinClient” PCs or at
least by keeping your existing hardware for longer.
As all the power you need to run your increasingly resource hungry applications
is performed on our high end (and high availability) servers, your team only need
low powered and hence cheaper hardware.
With access, security and threat protection built into the heart of our architecture
your users gain reassurance in what they do on-line and also know that all their
data is backed up regularly.
What do you get with a Hosted Desktop?
Most of our customers will be migrating from their existing ‘on my PC’ approach
to software and most suffer problems with application incompatibility, slower start
up times and possibly run on old versions of key business software solutions.
With our Hosted Cloud solution they can have ‘clean’ computers that have minimal
installed software (minimising incompatibilities, increasing stability) and with
our “per user per month” pricing on applications they will stay on the latest release
of their applications (such as Microsoft Office and Outlook).
So their PC’s boot up fast and they get to work quicker and more reliably, reducing
the frustration of things not working and also reducing the load on internal or
partner support.
Some also now gain much greater benefit by using their desktop on their tablet devices
such as their iPads, Android Tablets or BlackBerry devices.
Freeing them from PCs and making them mobile without having to carry a heavy laptop
and keeping their data safe and secure in the Cloud.
Hosted Desktop and Hosted Applications
With the typical starting scenario of a hybrid between a full cloud based hosted
Desktop and a local Desktop; we offer two ways of working with the benefits of Cloud
Computing.
- Hosted Applications
-
- Provide the solutions you need as icon’s on your local PC, but they are actually
installed and maintained on our cloud servers.
- You do not have to waste time installing anything on your local PC and with a low
‘per user per month’ fee you can have access to the latest version of your applications
such as Microsoft Office and Outlook.
- This is possible even if their PC, Laptop or Tablet does not run Windows 7 – giving
you the best of both worlds if (for example) you have an iMac or iPad.
- With Hosted Applications the user can store documents locally or on the Cloud (which
is more secure and regularly backed up).
- Hosted Desktops
-
- Aims to remove the reliance of all of your user’s software applications being installed
on their PCs.
- Hosted Desktops work as they do on local PCs with little compromise. The key difference
being that everything is looked after by us and they just need any internet enabled
device to connect to their Desktop.
- All data stored on their Hosted Desktop (e.g. the users “My Documents” folders)
is stored on the Cloud computer and is regularly backed up, so your users do not
need to worry about data loss.
Both of the above offer very similar benefits, the key difference being how the
user sees the Cloud. With Hosted Applications they use their local PC, Mac or Tablet
as normal and call up applications as they would any other. The application is then
opened up on the cloud seamlessly.
With a Hosted Desktop, the user opens up a Cloud Desktop and then uses that to open
applications (and therefore uses the Cloud as their main Desktop).
The only real compromise is that the user does not have ‘Administrator Rights’ to
their Desktop anymore. This is to ensure that the software on their Desktop stays
tested and compatible and also creates and additional level of security against
potential threats and Viruses.
Typically people start with our Hosted Applications then move towards Hosted Desktop
as a natural next step, before their PC’s need renewing - as this gives existing
hardware investments to have a longer lease of life.
